Noffy and I were thrilled to have been selected to represent the East at the forthcoming u18 Championships, to be held at Frickley Park. It is a huge honour and makes all the training worth while!

We are leaving on the 24th July and will be there for four days.

Wednesday-arrive

Thursday-arena familiarisation

Friday-dressage rest

Saturday-XC

Sunday- SJ

The dressage test we will be doing is a BE Novice Eventing test that was bought out this year. It is definitely the most complex test I have done so far, and includes both medium canter and trot as well as counter canter! We are having multiple dressage lessons to try and get this test as good as it can be, and there is also going to be a dressage test run through, at Little Downham horse trials, that will be marked by a proper judge in a competition atmosphere!

With the XC track being over 6 minutes it is vital that both Noffy and I are at peak fitness! We are currently taking Noffy to the gallops once a week, this enables him to have a proper canter and blow out as he can be quite stuffy. We switch between a flat, round gallop and a straight one that has a hill so that Noffy’s fitness can be as good as possible! With the ground being so hard at the moment we are struggling to get proper canters into him at home, so we are very lucky that we are able to go the the gallops.

The Showjmping is to be held the day after the XC, a format which I have never done before. The horses are expected to be a little tired and weary after galloping for over 6 minutes the day before, so it is important that we ride them as well as possible to help them, out and avoid them, getting long and flat. Last weekend Noffy and I won the 105cm SJ at Keysoe, so it was the perfect pre Frickley prep, and with an SJ lesson this weekend fingers crossed Noffy will be on top form on the final day!

We always try and vary Noffy’s exercise, as being an experienced campaigner he knows his job and does get bored doing the same thing repeatedly, so we try and make it both enjoyable but also beneficial for him, so that he is becoming fitter and improving whilst still enjoying himself.

With just under 2 weeks before we leave for Frickley we are in the final stages of preparations, so fingers crossed that all the hard work pays off!
